Today, U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded a discretionary grant worth $7,185,962.00 to the Scranton/Lackawanna Human Development Agency, Inc. (SLHDA), an umbrella agency dedicated to serving economically disadvantaged individuals within Lackawanna County and surrounding counties. The funds will be utilized for the organization's Head Start programs.

"Lackawanna County Head Start programs provide over 700 children with access to high-quality educational services. These federal funds are an investment in both our community and our children," said Rep. Cartwright. "I am a proud proponent of Head Start; as a strong and sustainable educational foundation is vital in strengthening our nation's economy."

Head Start is a national program currently celebrating its 50th anniversary. Created in 1965, the program addresses the educational and developmental needs of low-income, pre-school children. Head Start's comprehensive service system provides social, nutritional, and educational services for thousands of children and their families across the United States.
